Yoga Practice align with the Moon Phases

Yoga practice aligned with the moon phase is a concept that integrates the principles of yoga with the cyclic nature of the moon’s phases. The moon has long been associated with feminine energy, intuition, and transformation, the moon, also known as chandra in Sanskrit, represents our emotions and personality. It’s known as the mother, divine goddess, and women. In yoga, the moon is said to be connected to the “manas’ as part of the emotional, sensory mind. This part of the mind governs how we respond to the external environment and how we react emotionally. It’s deeply connected with how we experience ourselves within the world. The Moon correspondences with the subtle body such as the chakras, energy channels .and the energies (vayus). The subtle body is the vehicle which consciousness moves from life to life.

By incorporating yoga practice that align with each moon phase, it is a way that can deepen our connection with the nature and the cosmos. We can create space in our class to our students or ourselves to explore this connection with the adapting yoga postures and pranayama (breathing techniques) to better preserve the energy or use the idea of diminishing light as an image for exploring the sense of light and dark pulsates through the rhythms of our lives.

Incorporating the moon phases as the theme of our yoga practice:-

New Moon Phase

For example in the New Moon phase which last around 3 days. During this phase, it represent a time of new beginning and setting intentions. It’s a potent phase for self-reflection and planting seeds for future growth, we can harness the energy of the new moon by practice yoga that bring our Ajna Chakra or third eye chakra which René Descartes referred as the “seat of the soul” that can contribute to the simpler awakening of intuitive awareness in meditation, opening to more balanced awareness of one’s being in the universe.

First Quarter Moon Phase

While during the First Quarter Moon phase, this is the phase to say yes to every invite we receive, be open to everything around us, to be fully aware of the doors opening and pathways ahead that become clear. It is a time to explore poses that awakening our inner fire and thereby glow in the world, when this Chakra is in balance, we are assertive without being aggressive, determined without being forceful, we can more easily come to emotional balance and have the ability to make decision and face the challenges that the first quarter moon might bring. Core awakening yoga practice sequence and pranayama practice during this phase can help develop the strong yet supple centre, stoking the inner fire of motivation and embodying a clearer, stronger, yet softer way of moving, being, and manifesting our new moon intention which has taken root that we planted a week ago.

Full Moon Phase

One week after the First Quarter Moon, at the Full Moon, which represents a peak of energy, illumination, and heighten emotions. This is the powerful time for release, letting go and cultivating gratitude. We can practice Yin or restorative yoga can be particularly beneficial during this phase, it encourage deep relaxation and introspection.

Last Quarter Moon Phase

When it comes to the Last Quarter Moon, it invites us to reflect, review and preparation for closure. It’s a time to assess progress and release anything that no longer serves our growth. It is also time make a last effort to finish things off. Take the inspiration from the moon and do daily work around letting go. Continue to practice restorative poses or gentle twists to support the process of introspection and release.

By aligning our yoga practice with the moon phases, we can create a deeper connection to the natural rhythms of life and harness the unique energies associated with each phase. Remember to listen to your body’s needs and adapt your practice accordingly. Allow yourself the freedom to explore and experiment, find the practices that resonate most with you during each lunar cycle.
